Going out for a run is one of the few liberties that some fortunate people in the UK have available right now. This liberty can be hard to see as a liberty, however, when it’s absolutely freezing, pitch-black dark and raining.
Another perk of the UK, on top of our lovely lockdown situation, is that freezing, rainy days with little sunlight are quite common. So if you were putting your run off for ‘better weather’, then that isn’t happening! This post is for anyone, no matter what climate you live in, to give you a little motivation for getting that body moving, because music is a very special tool in our motivation tool kits!
1. I Want It All/ We Will Rock You – Queen (Sucker Punch Soundtrack)
2. On The Fence- Test The Waters
This song has all of the 90’s pop-punk nostalgia-filled energy you need to kick into gear. I listen to this song on every run and it takes me back to all those childhood hours well-spent listening to Kerrang!
Added bonus- this is my friend TJ’s band so please give them a listen! You won’t regret it. You can add them to your running playlist on Spotify here!
3. Unstoppable- Sia
4. Savage- Megan Thee Stallion
Singing ‘I’m a savage’ in your head as you power past your 2nd mile works as a compelling mantra to get you to your 3rd!
5. Go All Out- Salt Ashes
6. I am Moana (Song of the Ancestors)
Nothing beats sprinting downhill to an inspiring Disney song.
7. Jogging- LUCY
8. Power- Little Mix ft. Stormzy
9. Me, Myself and I- G-Eazy, Bebe Rexha
If you’re in a relationship or not it doesn’t matter, we all need a little me, myself and I time and running can be just that. Carving out some time for yourself in the day to take care of your body and mind with a cleansing run is an ultimate example of self-care.
10. I Think I’m OKAY- Machine Gun Kelly, YUNGBLOOD
11. Sissy That Walk- Ru Paul
The absolute punch that this song packs is enough to double your running pace, especially if you’re running off a stressful day. When people are getting you down, all you need is to hear Ru Paul say ‘unless they payin’ your bills pay them b**tches no mind’ to get you back on track.
12. 2 Phút Hơn- Pháo
As is common with most songs to come out of Tik Tok, this one is catchy af.
13. Space- Biffy Clyro
For running through valleys to get to your long-lost lover vibes, this is the one. It’s emotional and inspiring and what’s better for distracting muscle fatigue than pretending you’re in a film?
14. Everytime We Touch- Cascada (Nightcore Remix)
15. Never Satisfied- CORPSE
This is good for getting into a Lord-of-the-Rings-style Urukai run. The Spotify link is here!
I’m still on the run
Oppositions tryna get me
I’m still swervin’ ’til I’m done
Won’t off the gas until it’s empty
16. Follow Your Fire- Kodaline
My dad loved Kodaline and I can only listen to this song sometimes; otherwise I’m wailing like a baby in the middle of the park. On the times that I can listen I feel so inspired. My dad was a fitness freak and it helps me to feel closer to him when I’m doing things for my own fitness. It makes me happy to think of what his reaction would be like when I beat my running time or overtake someone’s score on Strava (because he was just a *little* competitive).
I’d really recommend working a song into your playlist that means a lot to you and that makes you feel closer to someone that you lost. Running is such a positive space for your mindset, so it makes perfect sense to think about someone important during that time.
17. How You Like That- BLACKPINK
The attitude in this song has me ready to jump into a fierce underground dance off in a random alleyway, Step Up style. The fact that I dance like a wacky-wavey-inflatable-arm-flailing-tube-man is irrelevant.
18. Final Song- MØ
When you’re coming to the end of your run and you want to keep up the pace, this song is golden. Hearing someone say, ‘we gotta carry on, don’t let this be our final song’ means, keep running until the playlist is done, keep pushing!
19. Safe and Sound- Capital Cities
This is a song that has gotten me through breakups, low mood and even a life-threatening and livelihood-destroying flood. This song reminds me that if I can get through what I’ve gotten through, then I can get through this run.
20. ‘Till I Collapse- Eminem
The final song on this list is my all-time running staple. This song comes along for EVERY ride and I like to save it for last. It gives me the motivation to kick it up a notch for the last part of the run. Add it to your Spotify playlist here and let me know if it works for you!
‘Cause sometimes you just feel tired, feel weak
And when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up
But you got to search within you, and try to find that inner strength
And just pull that shit out of you
And get that motivation to not give up, and not be a quitter
No matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse
I hope that you found this list of songs to add to your running playlist useful and motivating! You can use this as a playlist for any workout, it doesn’t just have to be running, so give it a go and let me know how your next workout gets on!
Any song suggestions for me? My playlist is a little out-dated and I’m really excited to get some newer songs in here- let me know your favourites!
